Pioneer's TS-A6963R 6-by-9-inch three-ways now feature upgraded power handling of 270 watts max. (40 watts nominal). And this year, the A-Series speaker line feature something they've inherited from the D-Series speakers, a basalt cone. Pioneer continues to set an example with next-generation technology for improved sound: the tweeter, magnets, surrounds, the voice coil wire, the basket and more are all high-performance components that make up a great speaker.

    Pioneer's A-Series Speakers

Pioneer A-series speakers outperform factory speakers on nearly every level. Packing a powerful punch, A-Series speakers are equipped with up to three independent tweeters with reinforced woofers, so every beat is heard and felt. Featuring a bigger, better cone than most OEM speakers, the A-series boasts serious output and booming bass. Extra-sensitive tweeters play at higher frequencies and are capable of handling stronger audio signals, resulting in vocals that are crisp and clear, even when you crank the volume.

    TS-A6963R Features

Carbon Graphite IMPP Interlaced Aramid/Basalt Fiber Cone
One of Pioneer's major speaker breakthroughs was IMPP (Injection-Molded Polypropylene), which allowed cones to be lighter and more rigid. Pioneer then added long stands of Aramid fibers into the mix, for extra strength. Now, they've gone even further with the TS-A6963Rs, adding basalt and carbon graphite interlaced with long aramid fibers to provide strength and rigidity that powerful bass sound requires. High-density compressed internal architecture is resilient, stacks up against high power well and transfers sound quickly. The result is full-bodied, rich sound with midrange depth that conventional IMPP cones cannot match, and the durability to stand up to the high volume levels, humidity, and temperature extremes that thrash other speakers.

    Large Diaphragm Tweeter
The newly developed tweeter disperses sound more widely with superior control, providing listeners with the best sound under all conditions, regardless of listening position or car. And the 1" mounting depth achieves more flexible installation.

Heat Resistant Polyester-Imide Resin Voice Coil Wire
Creating mechanical energy is hot work, especially at high volume levels. And as we all know, heat can cause distortion. That's why the TS-A6963R uses a heat-resistant polyester-imide resin voice coil wire. It allows the voice coil to handle more heat, improving input power handling as well as reliability. So go ahead. Turn it up.

    Power Handling
The TS-A6963R now handles a full 270 watts max. power (40 watts nominal). Along with enhanced power handling, you still get the same high performance that all the TS-A's deliver

4 out of 5 stars Good speakers for the price   May 2, 2009

For the price you pay, these are really good speakers. I installed it at the rear for my 2000 mit eclipse and drove them directly from my Pioneer DEH-P5900IB (4x14 RMS) HU. Now, the reason why I didn't give this a 5-star rating is because, I am comparing them with the stock 1-way infinity speakers. The Pioneer is a 3-way, so you will feel the difference in the high and mid range instantly. The low range freq, however, is NOT MUCH better than the stock Infinity; it is only SLIGHTLY better. The real improvement in low freq output for these Pioneer spkers can only be heard IF you play original CDs that is well mixed by the producers, such as Michael Jackson's Dangerous album or Madonna's Immaculate (I am an 80's/90's person). If you burn your own CDs at 128 kbps transfer rate, and play them thru these spkers, the base improvement is only marginal. Yes, the highs and mids are obviously better since the stock Infinity DOES NOT have a mid and tweeter. And if you play songs thru your IPOD, at a low transfer rate, the improvement in low freq with these Pioneers isn't fantastic.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that there are NO improvement in the low freq at all for these Pioneer speakers, just that I expected more. But at that price, you may consider my expectations as unrealistic and that I am not making a fair comparison with 8 year olds Infinity spkers. 8)

Nevertheless, I will be buying the Pioneer 6.5 component speakers soon for my front speakers... Right now, these 6x9s are overwhelming my front stock speakers...

At some point, I will also install an AMP to drive all these Pioneer speakers. I think the sound will be much richer then (and clearer).

But regardless, if your budget is tight and you don't want to install an AMP (yet), these are good speakers to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Best sound for the money!   January 7, 2010

I just replaced the rear deck speakers of my 99 Mazda 626 with these speakers, and I have to say that for the price you wont find anything better! Installation was relatively easy (keep in mind this is the first time I have actually replaced car speakers) and Pioneer was even kind enough to include screws and wiring. The speakers themselves are great. The bass is tight and strong, but don't expect the same quality as from a purpose-built subwoofer. The high frequencies are neither tinny nor piercing, and the mid-range sounds smooth and natural. I look forward to putting the 6" x 8" 3-way units from Pioneer into the doors and pairing them with the new head unit for a little extra power.

I listen to a whole range if music from regular rock and electronic to brutally mechanical industrial and EBM. No matter what type of music is played it sounds great coming through these speakers! I'd most definitely recommend these to somebody looking for great speakers at a great price.

Amazing speakers for the price. I was really amazed at how well these sound. These replaced my factory Bose speakers in my Acura and first time listening to these I felt like I had installed a sound system. Tight Bass, clear mids. I use an iPod through a cassette adapter and these really opened up the sound. I can drive with the windows down and still hear clean crisp sound at high level without distortion. Every now and then I find myself turning down the bass because these can hit low and hit hard.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm Very Impressed   July 11, 2010

I've built numerous car audio systems through the years and at various price points. Pioneer Speakers have always been a staple when purchasing 6x9 speakers on a budget. They always perform well and these speakers are no exception. The after market head unit in my '02 Stratus was starting to fail and I realized it was time for an upgrade. I purchased a Kenwood 50x4 - 22 wpc rms deck with USB Input, HD Radio, Sirius Satellite, etc... and was very happy with the upgrade. However, it did show a glaring weakness in my stock speakers and I decided to round out the system a little with upgrades to the front and rear 6x9's.
I didn't have to look far to find what I was looking for as I've always been a fan of Pioneer car speakers. At this price and with the desired specifications I was looking for such as high efficiency, full range bass into the low 30hz range, and good power handling should I decide to amp them in the future, these fit the bill for me in all ways.
I purchased and installed these myself, proper tools make installation much easier when removing rear decks and front door panels.
Unfortunately, there is no common color coding scheme in my make of vehicle when it comes to stock speaker wiring. This created a hit and miss situation as far as proper polarity when making the connections to the positive (+) and negative (-) speaker terminals. Long story short, I wired the fronts correctly and they sounded fantastic, but when I faded the rears in, the bass depth was lost and the sound became slighty muddy and poorly imaged. At this point I was hoping that it was a simple phasing issue and that reversing the connectors in the rear would solve the issue. So I reversed the connectors and proceeded to audition again.
I cued up Dire Straights - One World. The song has great dynamics, deep bass and kick drum along with Mark Knopflers trademark guitar tone that covers the mid-range rather well.
This time, I started with the speakers faded full front and brought the rear speakers in a little at a time to see if I could notice a difference after the re-wiring I had performed earlier.
I was a completely different experience. Very good bass response, tight highs and smoother mids. The dynamics were reproduced well and without distortion even at high volumes and the imaging had improved drastically.
I am now very very happy with these speakers and with my modest system in general. It won't blow your doors off, but it's great sounding, and produces a sound quality that in my mind, would reflect a higher investment. With that said.... for the price, these speakers are an absolute bargain and if driven by a decent head unit and/or amplifier, will perform at or beyond expectations for most people without a doubt.
